Melatonin for Dogs: What the Hormone Actually Does, and Where the Evidence Stops

Melatonin's clearest job in a dog's body is telling the brain that night has arrived, and that narrow, well-understood mechanism is exactly why I'm comfortable recommending it for some dogs and skeptical of it for others.
It’s close to 2 a.m., and an eleven-year-old shepherd mix named Otis is pacing a tight loop between the bedroom door and the hallway, nails clicking on hardwood, panting in a way that has nothing to do with heat. His owner has tried everything she can think of from the couch: a hand on his back, the low murmur of a podcast, a second walk around the block at midnight. Otis isn’t distressed by a storm or a stranger at the door. He’s just… awake, in the particular disoriented way that older dogs sometimes are at the hour when the rest of the house has gone quiet. This is the scene that usually precedes the melatonin question in my exam room, and it’s worth sitting with, because the answer depends entirely on what’s actually driving the pacing.
So is melatonin the right tool here, or is it being asked to do a job it was never built for?
American Kennel Club: Melatonin is a hormone the pineal gland releases in response to darkness, and its job in the body is remarkably specific: it tells the brain’s circadian clock what time of day it is. That’s a narrow mechanism, but it’s a well-characterized one, and it’s the reason melatonin shows up as a legitimate option for dogs whose sleep-wake timing has drifted — older dogs especially, whose natural melatonin production tends to decline with age. When an aging dog’s internal clock is the problem, supplementing the hormone that sets that clock makes physiologic sense. That’s different from treating melatonin as a general-purpose calming agent, which is how it’s marketed far more often than the evidence supports.
The research gap matters here. Human sleep studies on melatonin are relatively deep; the veterinary literature is much shallower, and most of what’s cited for dogs is extrapolated from small studies, case reports, or human data rather than large controlled trials in canine patients. That doesn’t make melatonin useless — the circadian mechanism is real biology, not marketing — but it does mean the leap from “regulates sleep timing” to “calms situational anxiety” is doing more work than the data can support. Mild sedation is a plausible side effect of melatonin, and sedation can look like calm from the outside without touching the underlying fear response the way a true anxiolytic pathway would.

Here’s where I get more decisive than a lot of general guidance on this topic. If a dog’s problem is genuinely circadian — restlessness that clusters at a predictable time of night, especially in a senior dog — melatonin is a defensible, low-risk first step, and I’ll say so plainly. If the problem is situational fear (thunderstorms, fireworks, a car ride to the vet), I reach for it far less readily, because the mechanism doesn’t line up with the complaint, even though it’s the supplement most owners ask about by name. The strongest counterargument I hear is that melatonin “works” for a lot of anxious dogs anecdotally, and I don’t dismiss that — a groggy dog is often a quieter dog. The safety conversation around melatonin gets the emphasis backwards more often than not. The hormone itself, at appropriate doses, has a wide margin of safety in dogs — ASPCApro notes that exposure to melatonin alone typically causes vomiting, sedation, or unsteadiness, and severe outcomes are uncommon. The real hazard sits in the packaging, not the pineal gland. A large share of human melatonin products, particularly gummies and fast-dissolve tablets, contain xylitol as a sweetener, and xylitol is genuinely dangerous for dogs, capable of causing a rapid, severe drop in blood sugar and, at higher doses, liver injury. Reading the full ingredient label, not just the front of the bottle, is the single most important safety step here — more important than the milligram count.
Dosing is typically calculated by body weight, and most sources converge on roughly 1 mg for dogs under about 10 pounds, scaling up toward 3–6 mg for larger dogs, though exact numbers vary by source and product concentration. PetMD and other veterinary references frame this as a starting range rather than a fixed prescription, and that framing is correct. Weight-based math gets you into a reasonable neighborhood; it doesn’t account for a dog’s other medications, existing health conditions, or how sensitive an individual animal turns out to be. That’s a conversation for a veterinarian, not a chart.
One caution deserves its own space, because it comes up constantly with senior dogs: melatonin is sometimes discussed as though it treats canine cognitive dysfunction, the age-related decline that can produce nighttime pacing, disorientation, and altered sleep patterns. It doesn’t. Supporting a disrupted sleep-wake cycle is not the same as treating the underlying neurologic process, and conflating the two risks delaying a real workup for a dog whose nighttime behavior actually reflects cognitive decline rather than simple circadian drift. What happened with Otis, in the end, was fairly ordinary: a veterinary exam ruled out pain and confirmed the pattern was consistent with an age-related shift in his sleep-wake timing, not full cognitive decline, and a low, weight-appropriate dose of plain melatonin given in the early evening smoothed out his nights within about a week. That outcome fits the mechanism. It wouldn’t have been my first move for a dog panicking through a thunderstorm.
Melatonin earns its place in a calming toolkit when the problem is genuinely about timing — and it should be used with real skepticism when it’s asked to solve something else.
